It is with great excitement that we introduce this handsome harlequin appaloosa son of Vintage Cashmere U-Taupe-ia and elite-fleeced, Running Late's Peaches and Cream. Peaches was purchased in 2019 for her outstanding fiber traits, beautiful phenotype, pedigree and patterned fleece. She does not carry an appaloosa or harlequin in her pedigree, but is an expressed pattern so she was included in the appy/harley program as a potential for throwing just what we want. In 2019, she was paired with harlequin appaloosa, Apache Gentleman. The two produced a lovely classic female appaloosa that was exported to Switzerland in early 2021-- Rare Gem Night Owl. In late 2020, Peaches was paired with harlequin male, Vintage Cashmere U-Taupe-ia "Taupie" and produced this handsome harlequin male, Rare Gem Camouflage! Born 11/15/21-- this handsome offspring is a fleece monster with presence galore. He was born on a 90 degree day and took a half day to fully dry. Sire, Taupie, was recently sold. Thank you Taupie for gifting us with such a gorgeous gem just prior to your departure! Camouflage is one for the serious appaloosa / harlequin breeder(s) to keep an eye on. UPDATE: Camo is a natural with the ladies. His cria started arriving late 2024 and we are very pleased with the results. His most recent is a handsome harlequin mini me born in April 2025. Check him out on his page. Myrtle’s 2025 cria has arrived—and she did not disappoint. Myrtle has just delivered a gorgeous daughter, Rare Gem Dappled Daphne, a rare reverse appaloosa and the very first reverse appy born here at Rare Gem Alpacas. This exciting female fits perfectly into our program focus on uniquely patterned, elite-fleeced alpacas. Myrtle herself is a large-framed female with a lovely head style and excellent fleece characteristics. She is proving to be a rock-solid production female: to date she has delivered two healthy daughters, both unassisted, and has demonstrated stellar maternal instincts from the moment each cria hit the ground. Previous owner/breeder shares… Myrtle is one of the very first offspring sired by H2R Motown Blues, affectionately known as “Mo” around the farm. Mo is a standout Velvet son with an impressive show record. What makes him truly special is his dam line—H2R Seraphina—one of their most coveted show winners and an even stronger production female. To date, only one Seraphina offspring has ever left their farm… and that’s Myrtle. Myrtle’s 100% Peruvian dam anchors the respected H2R “floral line,” which includes Myrtle’s half-sisters H2R Primrose, H2R Shasta Daisy and H2R Iris. At her very first show, Myrtle earned 1st and Best Bred & Owned at the MOPACA Invitational, along with a 1st place at the Mid America Alpaca Challenge. We are thrilled to have Myrtle in the Rare Gem foundation line-up and excited to watch Dappled Daphne—and Myrtle’s future cria—carry these genetics forward.

Description

We are delighted to welcome Rare Gem Hazel Nut, a standout addition to our herd and the very first offspring of our Harlequin Appaloosa herdsire, Rare Gem Camouflage, and our exceptional female, H2R Myrtle. Hazel Nut wasted no time making an impression—she was up and nursing within 10 minutes, a testament to her strength and vigor. Hazel Nut is the result of a carefully planned pairing, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the outcome. Myrtle, bred by Happy Hounds Ranch—renowned for producing elite alpacas—has proven to be an outstanding addition to our program. This being Myrtle’s first cria, we are overjoyed with the results and grateful to Happy Hounds Ranch for the opportunity to bring Myrtle into our herd. At first glance, Hazel Nut appeared to be a dark fawn or light brown, but as the days have passed, her coloring has begun to reveal its true complexity. Grey is emerging on her topknot and down the back of her neck, with distinct roaning on all four legs. Her unique coloration, combined with her pedigree, strongly suggests grey or roan genotype—a feature we look forward to confirming through testing. Hazel Nut is a lovely, strong cria with a striking presence. Her lineage is a blend of excellence, and we are excited to see how she develops. With her unique coloring and promising genetics, Hazel Nut is one to watch as she grows into her potential. Stay tuned for updates on Hazel Nut’s progress and genotype results—we are confident she will be a shining star in our breeding program!
